There are plenty of seminars, conferences, talks, lectures on how to be successful in modern business. But you will probably find that nothing has changed in centuries: hard work is the key to success. This week our sister newspaper, Ultima Hora, organised a conference by the Spanish top chef, Ferran Adria. He has been proclaimed as the best chef in the world. So what is his key to success? "Getting to work before everyone else and leaving work once everyone else has left." I remember Lord Jeffrey Archer being asked in a conference many years ago on how to write a bestseller. He replied "by working very hard". So we may live in a digital age with smartphones and computers but there is no substitute for hard work if you want to reach the top. And it appears that there are no short cuts. You put in the hours, work hard and you get the rewards. Adria even went further by saying that sometimes TV programmes rather disguised the fact that hard work was the key to success in a kitchen. Thankfully some things never change.
