Nautical industry
The Balearic government today underlined the importance of the nautical industry to the local economy. The Boat Show, which got underway in Palma, is a clear example of the size and importance of the industry and also its international flavour. But I think the local authorities should do more to help the nautical industry. I suspect that it could grow even further. The Balearic government should promote the nautical industry at all the major nautical fairs. I think the yachting/boating industry should be given the same importance as the tourist industry. It is vital for the local economy and sustains thousands of jobs. I think the organisers of the Palma Boat Show should be congratulated for organising a first-class event. The only low point today was the rain. But apart from that, the event is first class and it is a real showcase event for the islands. There is a strong possibility that Palma could become the major Mediterranean centre for the superyacht industry. At the moment it is the south of France, but high living costs mean that crews prefer to live in the cheaper Balearics. So there is another golden opportunity; perhaps even Palma council could help by providing support for yacht crews and their families who are moving to the island. The nautical industry is a shining example of a Balearic success story. It should be allowed to prosper and should be given the full support of the local authorities.
