I do have some sympathy for bar and restaurant owners along the Born in Palma who have seen their terraces "invaded" by the book fair. They have been forced to remove their tables and chairs to make way for stands selling books. The current council appears to have a problem with the bars and restaurants on the Born. I don’t know why but they are making life difficult for them. Initially the council wanted to remove the terraces but their proposal was thwarted by a referendum which voted for the terraces. Now it is the book fair which lasts for about a week but obviously it takes a while to set up.

I was in Palma yesterday, the Born looked horrible. Pre- fabricated boxes. Do you want tourists or not Mallorca? Move it to the another location
Dear EditorWould a solution be to confine the book fair to one side of the Born and extend it into nearby parts, up the stairs to the cathedral area.........the congestion is then spread out , bars get customers from bookfair visitors and other areas benefit from them too.? It seems common-sense is no longer a European trait, drowned in politics and bureaucracy.
I think the Born and the stylish cafes and terraces are lovely and it is a spot I always head for when I visit Palma But Yesterday .... What a mess!! Anyone who arrived after the book fair had finished must have thought the same Of course it is possible to clear an exhibition or parade overnight, it is simply not right for restaurants, cafes and their customers to suffer because an area cannot be put back to norm in 24hrs!
