Could we please remember that Majorca lives from tourism and that the majority of businesses within the city of Palma depend on tourism for their very survival. I say this because at the moment there does seem to be a movement, albeit small, against tourism. Yes, Palma is crowded in the summer months but we need tourists because otherwise our capital city would not enjoy one of the highest living standards in Europe. The boutique hotels which have sprung up across Palma are good news for the city. Not only do they attract big-spending tourists they also provide hundreds of jobs. Some residents associations are saying that enough is enough and no more tourist places should be built within the city. This is all very well, but without tourism we are nothing.

I don't agree that the profusion of boutique hotels is a good thing. All that is kept of the old building is the façade. Insides ripped out to install ultra modern and luxurious facilities that only the mega rich can afford. (Check out the prices they ask!) It is also the way the hoteliers are getting away around the planning laws. They have exhausted the coast to the extent that no space now exists, and are concentrating on city or 'boutique' suites with 'wellness' treatments for the rich, as well as their country 'agrotourism' villas - 'stay on a traditional mallorcan farm' where presumably you get the chance to muck out the pigs if you pay enough.
If the EU had not been insistent on bankrupting Spain, holiday costs would have remained affordable. That said, the British have made Spain their holiday destinations for many years and Mallorca has something for everyone, is a short flight time, good facilities and secure, unlike Middle East destinations which despite recovering from security problems still are not safe family destinations.
I rather think that you will find that they do,somewhere were they are welcomed and not blamed for just about everything, somewhere were they can rent an apartment should they wish to do so,somewhere were they are not seen as walking ATM's and are charged a tax the minute they get to their hotels.
