So, Majorca doesn't want tourists any more? This was the question which many British media outlets asked me following the announcement this week that Palma city council was banning holiday apartment rentals in the city. It is an obvious question but as we all know this is not the case. The council banned apartment holiday rentals because of the shortage of long-term rental homes for the resident population. On one hand it was quite a sensible move; on the other hand the council should ensure that the right message is received by the international media. Any new legislation which is announced here is going to be scrutinized by the international media, and the local authorities should take this into account. Sadly, this is not usually the case and therefore sometimes the islands get a bad press because they simply do not know how to get their message across.

The shortage of homes on Majorca is purely because not enough homes at affordable rents have been built on the Island and to demonize homeowners who rented out their apartments to tourists is deflecting people away from the real problem.
