It has been many months since a cruise ship moored up in Palma and we will probably have to wait even longer, still, until we see one again. It is interesting to note that this issue, before the coronavirus struck, was dividing Palma and the Balearic government was even forced to act, planning to ban the mega-cruise ship, or at least reduce their visits.

I think there are better ideas to revive tourism here, like no (Ill—spent) tourist tax, revive the holiday let business, etc. I certainly don’t want these monster ships here again. I was interested and appalled to see your heat map about a year ago of island pollution. The whole area from Arenal to Cala Pi was red. Why? Because out Westerly prevailing wind blows all their fumes in that direction. One result? Beaches with near zero undersea life. Cruise ships pollute too much, bring in little revenue. Again, cancel those ridiculous holiday letting rules, which came about solely due to hotelier/government collusion and corruption. Maybe they will think again. I predict 2021 will be as much of a washout as 2020 for hotels but some associated small businesses COULD revive if private rentals revived.
