A week or so ago, the president of the CEHAT Spanish confederation of hotel associations, Jorge Marichal, observed that there had been "a slowdown in last-minute bookings, because people now have tighter budgets".

We all know now that it's been an extraordinary year for tourism in Mallorca. But it's a sure fire bet that bookings will drop after September. It always has, and always will. People don't have holidays all year long. Life would be pretty good if they did, but they don't. It's daftly easy to predict. However, you might remember all the doom and gloom presented here late last year, and early this year, while bookings were unusually strong, yet the stats (apparently) said otherwise. Yet as it turned out, it was an exceptionally well booked winter, spring, and now summer. At present, every villa and private let I know is still largely booked through October. November is usually the single worst month for bookings (nobody has holidays in November), but by the end of December, things start booking up again. Most everybody I know is already booked for Christmas and new years. And it's quite unusually early for that to happen. And 2023 April-October bookings are already coming in, which is much, much earlier than usual. Normally, the next year's booking season starts in November. This is very unusual. But it's Mallorca. It's the "go to" place now. In the winter, golfers, cyclists, hikers, and people just wanting a break from the cold North. And the quality of accommodation has improved significantly in the past decade. Winter has become increasingly popular over the past 5 years or so, despite the pandemic. And outside the resorts, everything remains open as usual. People are waking up to that now. It's a great 2-hour-flight getaway in January-February-March-April. And the prices are very affordable. So, whether the statistics tell us an accurate story is a debatable topic. But if it's anything like last year's gloom and doom, I suspect that it's going to be yet another blockbuster for the winter and through the next year. And that's good for everybody.
