No flights at Palma airport tonight due to Y2K fears

No aircraft are to take off or land from Palma airport between 11pm tonight and 1am tomorrow morning for fears over the effect which the millennium bug may have on airport facilities. According to the Spanish airports governing body AENA the only airports which will have flight movements over that period of time will be Madrid, with four cargo planes, and Gran Canaria with one. Although AENA have carried out a complete renovation of their computer systems to make them Y2K compliant they are still being very cautious. Across the country 900 more staff will be brought in to reinforce the existing airport workers and all nine major airports (Palma, Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante, Valencia, Santiago, Tenerife Sur and Gran Canaria) will be linked to a nationwide network of government commissions monitoring the effects of Y2K.
