Portals was the scene of a car chase on Sunday morning after a 30-year-old driver was spotted driving dangerously and too fast by two police offers whom the driver later tried to knock down, according to Calvia police. The two officers tried to flag the driver down; he apparently sped off but was finally blocked by police in calle Figuera. It was when police tried to approach the vehicle that the driver nearly drove into one of the officers. The officer leapt back into his squad car and called for back up. At first the driver refused to get out of the car and police were forced to smash the windscreen. The driver was made to take a breath test which apparently detected that he was under the effect of drugs. According to the police, the suspect was due to be admitted to the psychiatric hospital in Palma, in accordance with the wishes of his family.
