Cabbies call off their strike

Palma cabbies have called off their threatened two day strike over the Easter period after reaching an agreement with their counterparts from other municipalities. The Palma drivers had been threatening industrial action over a new law which would allow tax drivers from other municipalities to collect passengers at Palma airport. At the moment only city-based cabbies are allowed to do so. The local ministry for transport is looking into the new law and it will make a ruling over the next few weeks. The strike would have brought chaos to the island over the Easter period. Recently, Palma taxi drivers have been criticised for not operating enough in the city centre and outer surburbs. There have been allegations that many drivers just sit at the airport waiting for the one lucrative fare.
