There was condemnation and support for former Balearic Agriculture Minister, Joan Mayol, who resigned on Monday night amidst fears that the debate raging between the farmers and the government over the water crisis was losing all sense of reality. President of the Partido Popular Parliamentary group, José María González Ortea, accused the left wing coalition government of using Mayol as a scape goat to cover up the lack of policies. Ortea said that the events of the past few days demonstrated that the government has faltered in its agricultural policy. Ortea said that the farmers' crisis is not up to the Agricultural Ministry to solve but the government and the Chief Minister, Francesc Antich. Ortea challenged Antich on whether the Chief Minister planned to use the Tourism and Environment ministers as scape goats when their policies, such as the tourist tax and the water plan, fail or hit a fresh crisis. The leader of the parliamentary opposition said that resignations are not the answers to the government's problems. Ortea said Antich's principal problem is that his government is short of ideas and solutions and should have spent the past few months working to find ways of dealing with the crisis hanging over the region's agricultutal sector.
