Gorbachev will be spending the next three weeks at the Formentor with his daughter and grand-daughter. Although retired from active politics he is still involved in charity work. In a recent interview with the New York Times he said that he fully supported new Russian leader Vladimir Putin eventhough he was lacking in experience. He said that Russia had reached a very low point during the leadership of Boris Yeltsin. Gorbachev said that Putin understood that he needed the support of Europe and the United States to carry out his reforms. When asked if Putin's KGB past would hamper his performance as President Gorbachev said George Bush had headed the CIA and this hadn't affected his role as President. The message from the Formentor is clear, Gorbachev doesn't want to be bothered because he is here to relax.
