The drug squad of the National Police in Palma made the biggest ever haul of ecstasy in the Balearics, when they confiscated 21'000 tablets, with a black market value of more than 50 million pesetas. Four people of North African and Dutch origin were arrested and more arrests are expected over the next few days. The police also searched various premises in Alcudia. The drug was due to be distributed in the Balearics and on mainland Spain. The ecstasy was found in Palma, although the headquarters of the gang is believed to be in Alcudia. The haul was the result of investigations which started several months ago. Police have identified more people allegedly involved in the network and they are being kept under surveillance. The drug is believed to have been brought in from a central European country, not manufactured on the island. Up to yesterday, the biggest ecstasy haul was 19'000 pills confiscated by the Guardia Civil in Arenal in December 1995.
