From tomorrow, jurisdiction of the Paseo Maritimo will be in the hands of the Palma city council, under an agreement signed in May between Mayor Joan Fageda and Francesc Triay, the chairman of the Port Authority. The two parties agreed to bring forward the cession, even though the process may continue for some years yet and is still pending approval from the central government. The agreement covers an area which starts at the Moll Vell and includes the width of the road to the limited between the pavement and the sea, and the pedestrian area. The city council is now studying plans to regulate parking and traffic, although any decision will depend on the results of a study on mobility. The council plans to create new parking spaces and new pedestrian areas, in an effort to improve the flow of traffic along the Paseo Marítimo, an accident black spot. The Local Police have been responsible for road safety on the Paseo since last July. As to the cost of maintaining the Paseo, the Port Authority said it is in a good state of repair and also generates a lot of income, as the rates in the area are very high.
