The Mayor of Palma Joan Fageda yesterday announced that the EMT Municipal Transport Company is to start renewing its fleet of public buses. The new buses said the Mayor, will be more ecological and better adapted for the disabled. In total 102 new Mercedes Benz buses will be gradually brought in to replace the ageing fleet of buses between now and June 2001. The new buses also marks a campaign to improve the municipal bus company's image and its infrastructure. Fageda also announced plans for a new customer care centre to be set up in the centre of the city. At the moment, 25 percent of the city's population use the public bus service, 25 percent move about the city on foot and the remaining half by private transport. The new bus fleet will also receive greater support from the Local Police in making sure that the city's bus lanes remain free of unauthorised traffic in order to make sure that the service operates more fluidly.
