The New Year will see the Balearic government take another technological leap forward with internet WAP mobile telephone users able to receive and access the very latest information. The government's director general for Technology and Communications, Carles Bona, yesterday unveiled the WAP phone information service. The Balearics has the second highest number of WAP phone users in Spain after Aragon and at present there are 3'000 WAP phone clients in the region - in Spain there are a total 250'000 but Bona estimates that over the next 12 months, the figure in the Balearics will rise to 10'000. Bona said that the WAP phones offer more flexible and faster way of accessing information than via a web page. The government's WAP service has been developed in co-operation with the Balearic Institute of Innovation and Technology and via a simplified web site, will offer WAP clients immediate and easy access to information about the Balearic government and the latest news and reports. WAP clients can currently access the Chief Minister's Christmas speech and message of best wishes, which has been used to launch the new WAP service. The government also hopes that by taking the lead, the move will encourage other local businesses to follow its example. The government's web site now provides all the information for those interested in using the new WAP service. Bono also said he believes that the WAP phone will become an instrumental part of business and communications for the future.
