The Majorcan sea claimed its first victim of the year as German tourist Diter Zenonas, aged 45, drowned while swimming off Palmira beach in Peguera. He was here on a week's holiday with his wife and brother. He had gone for a swim early in the morning but got into difficulties about 300 metres from the shore. His brother was unable to help him as he cannot swim, but he raised the alarm, and Local Police of Calvia, Guardia Civil, Civil Defence and Maritime Rescue workers arrived almost immediately. The tourist was pulled from the water but paramedics were unable to save him. An autopsy will be performed.
