A full police investigation has been launched after the body of a stillborn baby was found buried in a shallow grave in a public park in the centre of Palma yesterday. The shocking discovery was made by Tomeu, a young gardener hoeing the flower beds in the Parc des Estaciones yesterday afternoon. He told of how the machine he was using turned up a piece of sheet with something inside. At first I thought it was a dead animal and I alerted my colleagues. When we opened the bundle we found the baby and we called the police immediately. National Police homicide officers attended the scene and questioned Tomeu and other witnesses. Apparently the flower bed had not been dug up for the past six months. According to the gardener the baby appeared to be coloured, although that condition could be because of the length of time the body has been lying in the grave, and was recently born, although the length of time the naked body has been in its shallow grave has yet to be determined.
