Two persons died and one was seriously injured in a traffic accident in the early hours of yesterday morning, on the road from Alcudia to Puerto de Pollensa. The victims were named as the driver, Spaniard Manuel Demdaño Gonzalez, aged 36, and front seat passenger, Sven Meljaim Strambach, aged 29, of Germany. The passenger who was injured was a 17 year old German who has not been named. A third passenger, who has not been named, escaped unhurt. According to Guardia Civil sources, the accident occurred at 3.20am at kilometre 64.9 of the road leading to Puerto de Pollensa. The sources say that the driver apparently lost control of the car, an Opel Corsa, on a bend, left the road and hit a telephone post. The fire brigade had to be called out to cut the victims free of the wreckage. The cause of the accident is being investigated. This was the most serious accident of a day which saw numerous minor crashes all over the island, most of them caused by the rain. One of the worst accidents occurred shortly after 2pm on the old Sineu road, at the junction with the Santa Eugenia road. Three people were injured when two cars were involved in a collision. Several cars were involved in a pile-up on the Palma-Puerto Pollensa road, at the Sa Pobla junction, but no serious injuries were reported. The driver of a car sustained serious injuries when his vehicle was involved in a collision on the Algaida to Llucmajor road. A young motorcyclist had to be rushed to hospital after being involved in an accident in Alcudia.
