Over 70 million pesetas is to be spent on a new initiative aimed at reducing the number of fatal Aids cases in the Balearics by ten per cent over the next four years. The Balearics has the highest number of Aids cases per capita in Spain. Yesterday the Balearic government unveiled a new plan to try and prevent the further spread of the illness, avoid new cases and improve guaranteed medical care with the final objectiove of reducing the number of patients who die from Aids. One of the projects is to set up a medical centre for prostitutes and also ensure that all chemists take part in a scheme to provide drug addicts with clean syringes, in exchange for used ones. The local government will also be working closer with non-governmental organisations to try to improve society's attitude to Aids and people suffering from the illness.
