A forest fire broke out yesterday on the mountains of Alcudia close to the home of Colin McRae.
Balearic forest fire fighters yesterday battled three blazes, one in Ibiza and two in Majorca, the worst in Alcudia. The alarm was raised in Alcudia at midday yesterday and fire fighters battled the blaze throughout the afternoon, until 5.20pm, when the fire service reported that the blaze was under control. The Balearic Nature Institute, whose fire units fought the flames with teams from the Majorca Fire Brigade, reported last night that at least nine hectares of shrub land and pine forest had been destroyed on the Puig de Son Fe mountain which overshadows the popular holiday resort. The area hit by the fire is also where former World Rally Champion Colin McRae has recently bought a large country estate and there were fears that the fire would spread to neighbouring properties.
