The Balearic government has launched a massive damage limitation exercise in order to try and patch up the damage done to the island's already soiled image by the Balearic Minister for Tourism, Celesti Alomar. Alomar's comments to the German magazine Focus, that he wanted to see a 20 per cent drop in mass tourism and an increase in big spending visitors, went down like a lead balloon in Germany, so much so that the local government contacted the magazine, claiming that Alomar never made the remarks and asked for a rectification. Focus changed its digital publication to include the letter from Palma, but refused to rectify its interview. Sources for the Balearic Tourist Industry says that Alomar never made the remarks, but Focus is sticking by its report and Alomar's comments have been picked up across Europe, including in London.
