A building in Palma's Calle Lope de Vega was evacuated shortly before midnight on Sunday, following a fire which broke out in a sixth floor flat. Nobody was injured in the blaze, but material damage was considerable. The flat was empty at the time, and the alarm was raised by the occupant of the flat above, who noted smoke and went downstairs to investigate. Local police and firemen broke down the door to gain entry but by that time the fire had taken hold and was spreading rapidly, the flames reaching a height of several metres. In view of this, the firemen ordered the evacuation of the entire building. It took them four hours to bring the fire under control. The flat was occupied by a disc jockey who had an extensive record collection running into thousands, stacked all over the flat.
