The fly plague which has blighted Calvia has decreased due to yesterday's heavy rainfall, but is still causing problems, say Wendy and Simon Peters. New theories as to why there has been such an outbreak of flies have been put forward by Leon Chandler of Delsies Car Hire in Puerto Portals. He lives high up in the San Font area and from his home, he says he can see a massive rubbish site off the Andratx road, near the Santa Ponsa roundabout. Mr Chandler says that the council usually set fire to the rubbish site every year to keep the area hygienic. This year, the council have not set the rubbish pyre alight and it has grown to twice its usual size, causing it to be part of Mr Chandler's view. The rotting refuse is probably causing the increase of flies, adding to health fears which have been sparked by the swarms of black creatures over people and food for the last four weeks. Mrs Peters and many other Calvia residents are waiting anxiously for news from the council about what action they will take to get the flying menace under control.
