Spanish minister of labour Juan Carlos Aparicio said in Palma yesterday that the effect of the terrorist attacks on the US could be a risk to Balearic tourism, but also an opportunity, as has happened in relation to other crises and conflicts. He said that in the past, the islands have benefited over other tourist resort areas which are more conflictive. Aparicio was speaking at the closing of the fifth Anglo-Spanish seminar on employment, organised to promote debate and increase co-operation between the two countries. The minister indicated that American airlines would suffer from the after effects of the terrorist attacks but not so the European airlines. Commenting on the possibility of the major companies taking advantage of the uncertain situation to cut jobs, he said all the member states of the European Union have framework guarantees to prevent this type of measure happening.
