The increase in road deaths in the Balearics last year and the fact that the decrease in fatal accidents in Spain as a whole was the lowest in the European Union has caused widespread concern. Yesterday the Balearic environmental organisation GOB unveiled a series of measures which could be introduced to try and reduce the high death toll in the region. Reducing the speed limit and the number of hire cars on the roads were just two of the suggestions. The Balearics has one of the highest road death tolls in the country and GOB said that the time has come for some effective action to be taken. No more motorways and millions of euros pumped in to improving the existing, but in some parts, crumbling road network. GOB also repeated calls for more investment in the public transport system, otherwise people will never leave their cars at home, as the Balearic government desires.
Less accidents;less hire cars
