The spate of bad weather and building work to improve drainage and sewage pipes in the Port of Pollensa is causing traffic chaos and driving residents round the bend. The port has been a disaster zone since it was battered by the November hurricane and repair work has been slow to get off the ground, but residents are furious that the local council has launched everthing at once, just weeks away from the start of the summer season. People living around the harbour have complained to the local council about the lack of sufficient notification about the road and sewage works and the local authority's failure to have installed an adequate and well sign-posted alternative traffic circulation plan. Parked cars have been nudged and scratched by coaches and lorries trying to navigate their way though the Port and hundreds of residents have told the council they are “ashamed” of the “disasterous situation.” The chaos has only been made worse by the recent bad weather and the Easter holidays. Many residents have noticed a sharp increase in the number of vehicles in the port over the past few weeks and all are having to negotiate the traffic chaos. One resident said that tourists driving to the port for the first time, are getting so mixed up in the new traffic system, they find themselves heading straight out on the road to Formentor. The council claims that the situation is all under control and the diversions are properly sign-posted. The sewage works along calle Joan XXIII, the main cause of the problems, are due to be completed in the first week of May, but residents do not understand why the repair work was not carried out earlier this winter to avoid all the present problems.
