The threatened general strike next month will cause chaos in the tourism industry and misery for tens of thousands of holidaymakers. Spanish unions look set next week to call a general strike for June 20 and industrial action will bring the country to a halt. Tourism facilities, hotels, airports and public transport services will all be affected and the strike, coming as peak season gets under way, will do nothing for Spain's image and only damage the Balearics' dented image further. For a quarter of a million British and German holiday makers, Majorca means strike misery after being caught up in last year's three-day coach strike which is one of the main reasons for the decline in tourism this year - the last thing the Balearics needs is a general strike with mass pickets terrifying unsuspecting holiday makers and families. Leaders of CCOO and the General Workers' Union will meet on May 23 and are expected to make a formal strike call.
