It was not just the beaches which were damaged in the storms last winter. Many of the roads were also seriously damaged. The Council of Majorca now has responsibility for the state of the roads and tomorrow it is expected to approve improvements to various stretches of the C-710 from Pollença to Andratx. The worst of the damage was repaired almost immediately, but the Council now wants to carry out various projects to further improve the road, the main one crossing the Tramuntana mountain range. Gonzalo Aguiar, the director for roads, said the work would consist basically of rebuilding walls and resurfacing some parts of the road. The drainage system of the road will also be improved. Work will be carried out in one stretch of the road as it passes through Deia. The road had to be closed to traffic for several days because of the extent of damage which brought down walls and affected the asphalt. Work will also be carried out on a stretch of the road at Sa Calobra, as well as the access to Fornalutx and the Monnàber tunnel. The cost of the work, which will begin in September, will be in the region of 1'188'600 euros. The council will also asphalt the Llucmajor-Campos, Manacor-Felanitx, Artà-Capdepera and Santanyi-Portopetro roads in September. The Council is making improvements to the island roads one of its priorities.
