The Calvia council, under pressure from the business community have announced plans to alter their controversial pay and display parking system, introduced in coastal areas this summer. Residents, under the accord announced yesterday, will be exempt as their citizens cards will allow them to access the parking machines free of charge. Vehicles belonging to the phone company and the Gas and Electricity Board will also not be charged. The council also announced that all those who fail to display a parking ticket will be fined 30 euros. Repeat offenders risk a penalty of between 60 and 90 euros. The move has been welcomed by residents but tourists and visitors to the area will still have to pay. The business community has reported a major drop in takings.
