This year the Balearics reduced the six month waiting list for drug addicts to virtually no time at all by doubling the money spent on helping and treating drug abusers. At the moment some 2.500 addicts are receiving treatment and next year, 1.8 million euros is to be spent on drug rehabilitation programmes, double the 900.000 euro budget in 1999. Apart from extra funding, extra human resources have been made available with drug abuse care centres operating seven days and week and medical staff attending 300 patients per month, double the previous figure. There are four drug attention centres in Palma and five across the island which are managed by the Insular Council of Majorca. This year, some of the centres have introduced alternative therapies which have enjoyed a great deal of success.
