Over 20 of Europe's top cycling teams have confirmed they will be coming to the island when the XII Volta a Mallorca kicks off the season on February 2. The popular event always attracts top name professional cyclists intent on getting themselves in shape for the season and this year will be no exception. Team Telekom, currently training on the island, head the list of teams for the event, alongside Dutch team Rabobank and Spanish teams iBanesto.com and Once-Eroski. Five time Tour de France Green Jersey winner Erik Zabel of Team Telekom is one of the big names for the five day event, as is former Tour de France King of the Mountains winner Richard Virenque and Spanish riders Joseba Beloki (third overall Tour de France) and Oscar Freire (former World Champion). Unlike typical tours riders are allowed to pick and choose which stages they compete in, although there is also an award for overall best rider.
