If there is conflict with Iraq it is more than likely that giant U.S. air force B52 bombers will be refuelling high above the skies of the Balearics. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar has given the U.S. permission to use Spanish bases if war breaks out in the Gulf. It is expected that U.S. Air Force tanker aircraft would be stationed in Spain and fly out and refuel the B52s over the Balearics. A similar state of affairs occurred during the last Gulf war when B52s were clearly visible in local skies. During the 1991 war the giant U.S. bombers were operating from bases in the United Kingdom and flew to the Iraq from there. Spain's Prime Minister has made it clear that he fully support President Bush and is not ruling out the possibility.
