Science Week

SOLLER
FOR the fourth consecutive year, the Balearic Science Museum in the municipality of Soller, is taking part in the “Science and Technology Week”. Now open, the event will finish on 14 November. There is a full programme including contributions from Soller's Botanical Gardens.

One of the key features of the agenda is workshops geared to youngsters. They will be taught, in one session, about the world of mushrooms and how to identify the different species existing on the Islands. Museum director Carolina Constantino has high hopes for the courses designed to introduce young children to the world of science.

Separately, the Balearic Science Museum is organising a “Mushroom Week” between 20 and 27 November, in collaboration with the Balearic University.
Children's playground

PORT OF ALCUDIA
THE council-owned “green” area alongside the Gesa swimming pools, is shortly to be furnished with a set of swings for children with rubberised paving underneath. Until recently, the swings had been located alongside the Sa Torreta housing area which has now been singled out for significant reform works.

Golf course hotel

POLLENSA
THE proprietors of Pollensa's golf course are looking for a private investor to build a five-star hotel on the land, capable of accommodating 100 people.

Managing director, Cristina Schallock, has confirmed that the golf course already has in its possession all necessary permits from the regional ministry of Tourism and Pollensa Town Council. “All we need now is a Majorcan developer to bring the project to fruition”, she said. “The project design has been undertaken by the same architect, Toni Obrador, who provided plans for the Hotel Son Net”.

The hotel would be built to a Mediterranean village design with a central building similar in style to Majorcan manor houses, with an interior patio. This would substitute the current reception and restaurant building.

Rail service extension

MANACOR
CURRENTLY, no official plans exist to extend the railway line from Manacor to Sant Llorenç, Arta and Capdepera. As a result, Opposition parties on Manacor town council have condemned the “lack of forward planning” and called for the issue of the extension of rail services to outlying areas in the eastern part of the Island to be addressed.

It would appear that recovering the routes of the old railway lines to these areas is not a viable proposition because they are now being used as cross-country cycle and excursion tracks.

Another proposal put forward by the Majorca Union (UM) party calls for the planning of a railway extension from Manacor to Arta “which doesn't cross the built-up town area”. UM urged the ruling party on Manacor town council to start talks with Majorcan Railway Services (SFM) with a view to getting the project underway.

Cycle paths

MANCOR DE LA VALL
THE Balearic government has included Mancor in the network of cross country cycle routes in the Islands. Managed by the Institute for Strategic Tourism, part of the regional Tourism ministry, the overall plans aim to improve signposting and surfacing along already-existing cycle tracks. Such routes are mostly used by tourists, said local mayor, Bernardi Coll.

Property upgraded

MURO
THE town council in Muro is to upgrade the Casetes de Capellans in the coming year. Formalities related to refurbishment works on this property situated on the Playa de Muro need to be finalised.

The confirmation of the improvement comes in the wake of a call from Majorca Union spokesman Jaume Perelló for urgent attention to “these municipal installations which have seriously deteriorated”.
