THE environmental group GOB has spoken out against what it calls a “new boom in the construction of golf courses,” claiming that 11 new projects are in the planning stages and three are already under construction.

This is “unnecessary,” a spokesman said, “as there are sufficient installations to meet demand.” But José Jiménez, the chairman of the Balearic Golf Course Association, hit back saying that “the only limit on the construction of new golf courses, apart from that laid down by the administration, is the demand of the golfers who visit the islands.” However, GOB maintains that building more golf courses “is not convenient” because of the impact on the environment, including the increase in the consumption of water and the construction of more hotel beds.

The spokesman said that they were “concerned” because the new development plan for Majorca, the Plan Territorial due to be approved in December, “opts for the construction of new golf courses.” There are already 18 golf courses in the Balearics.
