THE Modern and Contemporary Art Museum Es Baluard has purchased the painting Cala de San Vicente by Sorolla, one of the few Majorcan landscapes by the Valencian artist. It was purchased at a Sotheby's auction of Spanish late 19th-early 20th century art in London earlier this month. The museum also purchased Escena Mitológica by Josep Maria Sert at the same auction. Cala de San Vicente is an oil on canvas, 51.5 by 73 centimetres, and it was painted by Sorolla in 1919. The painting had been expected to fetch between 265'000 and 368'000 euros and it went for 311'963 euros, including commission. The Sert work is an oil and tempera on canvas painted between 1912 and 1913. It went for 27'317 euros.
