THE anti-theme park lobby SOS Can Vairet has started a mass petition as it launches its bid to stop a theme park being built in Calvia, the Balearic environmental organisation GOB said yesterday.

GOB, which announced a few weeks ago that, with the support of a number of local residents, youth and environmental groups, associations, unions and political parties that the anti-theme park lobby was being set up, confirmed yesterday that it is now taking action to try and block the project from going ahead near Son Ferrer.

SOS Can Vairet has drawn up a seven-point document on why the project should be stopped, claiming that it will cause “irreparable” damage to an area of “idyllic” countryside, “of which only a few remain in Calvia.” The lobby is also concerned about the strain on natural resources the park with have in the area and the increase in noise and traffic it will cause.
GOB said yesterday that it intends to launch a wave of “peaceful” protests against the park and will not stop until it saves the Can Vairet estate.
The Danish company behind the theme park are highly experienced in the development of fun parks and every effort has been taken to make the park as eco-friendly as possible.

The project is no stranger to controversy, it sparked protests from GOB when as estate near Inca was first considered as the site for the project.
