By Humphrey Carter OVER the next 12 months, the best part of two million pounds is going to be spent on dramatically improving the Port of Soller. The picturesque port has been the target of a steady flow of complaints about its poor state of repair and dirty beach over the past few summers and it appears that the Balearic government has decided to respond and take action.

Public Works Minister Mabel Cabrer announced the 2.966.141 project on a site visit to the port yesterday, explaining that it will cover the cost of an overall improvement plan which will include better parking, lighting, sewage, water and electricity. Cabrer added that the project also includes plans to re-develop the port area by repaving the promenade and installing better facilities for local traders, bars and restaurants. “We want to create a quality and traditionally Majorcan environment in the port,” the Minister said.
There is also a proposal to completely pedestrianise the port area. This would be accomplished by constructing a tunnel leading off the present access road and diverting all traffic round the back of the town. Work on the tunnel is expected to start soon in order to meet the 12-month deadline.

The Marineria quay is also going to be extended and there are plans to reform the Ribera and commercial quays.
The nautical sector welcomed the project as it will also mean an increase in the number of moorings for small and medium sized vessels.
The local port authority also wants to improve access and facilities for passenger shipping operating out of Soller such as the daily trips along the north coast to Sa Calobra.
