Palma City Council is to set up six free public toilets in the centre of the city. They are due to be open for service by the end of the year, Tourism Councillor Alvaro Gijon confirmed yesterday. A bid for 423'000 euros is to be put out to public tender for the project, he said.

The toilets will be in Via Roma, Plaza del Mercat, Plaza España, Avenida Antoni Maura, Parca de la Mar and on Santo Domingo hill.
Of the total, 331'000 euros will be spent on the supply of installations. Maintenance is predicted to be in the region of 90'000 a year.
Gijon said the toilets will be self-cleaning but between the months of May and September, a back up team will make sure the facilities are always up to scratch.

Materials used in the W.C. installations are designed to be vandal-proof, durable and weatherproof and to be accessible to people with limited mobility.
