Palma.—Bars and restaurants with terraces along the seafront in Palma and part of the Playa de Palma will now be able to open until one o'clock in the morning every day of the week until 15th October. The new bylaw was approved yesterday by Palma City Council.

The change in legislation means that businesses in these locations will be able to remain open one hour longer than had been the case to date when opening times were fixed from Monday to Thursday plus half an hour extra at weekends and public holidays.

Included in this extra allowance are the terraces in the so-called “Jamón” area of the Playa de Palma which is not on the seafront.
Civil Service Councillor Irene San Gil explained that the move forms part of a pilot scheme which aims to “test the water” so far as later opening hours are concerned prior to modifying bylaws more widely in the Playa de Palma and Palma's Paseo Maritimo. In the meantime, said Gil, the later opening responds to calls from tourist businesses during the high season. The council meeting which approved this extension of opening hours at the same time limited hours of business in the Palma suburb of Sa Gerreria to 11pm so as to avoid ongoing conflict with local residents who claim they can't sleep because of late night noise.
