Palma.—The project, which has been on the drawing board during the term of office of successive Balearic governments, has gone ahead after the Partido Popular (PP) annulled a land protection order which had been placed on Ses Fontanelles by the previous Socialist coalition.

However according to an agreement between land owners, the government and conservation organisations, 230'000 square metres is being ceded to Palma City Council for the protection of natural wetlands and the development of a botanical park.

The commercial centre at Ses Fontanelles is to be called Parque Aqua Mágica (Magic Water Park) and will mean an investment of around 230 million euros.
A study carried out by the Economy department of the Balearic University (UIB) has calculated that some 5'000 jobs will be created by the development of which half will consist of direct employment.

The PP government managed to get the green light to go ahead with the project after it committed to an “environmental monitoring” plan to make sure the natural surroundings don't deteriorate as a result of the development.

Parque Aqua Mágica is scheduled to open in the spring of 2015. Because of its appeal to international shoppers, hopes are high that the complex will be a trigger to promote all-year-round tourism for the whole of the Playa de Palma, with its complementary leisure facilities.
