The Council of Majorca has been given the necessary legal permission to import waste and treat in at the Son Reus incinerator.
The Council announced yesterday that the first shipment of waste will arrive in early January from Sabadell, on the mainland.
The Councillor for the Environment, Catalina Soler, said yesterday that she was very pleased that permission has been granted despite efforts by opposition parties and local environmental groups to try and block the move.

Soler said that the Council of Majorca has met all the necessary European Union requisites to import and treat waste from overseas and expects to able to carry out this first trial run during the first two weeks of January.

Eventually, the Council of Majorca intends to import waste from Italy and even the United Kingdom.
The waste will be shipped to the Port of Alcudia and then transported to Son Reus by road.
