Newsdesk THE first baby born in the Balearics in 2009 arrived just 26 minutes after the clock struck midnight to signal the start of the New Year. Maria Parra Bennasser was born at Palma's Son Dureta Hospital just eight hours after mother Lucia visited the hospital for a check-up on her pregnancy, said proud father Emilio.

Maria, who is the first child of Lucia and Emilio, weighed in at 2'730 grammes (approximately six pounds). “We visited the hospital at 4pm for a check-up,” said Emilio. “But the medical staff noticed that Lucia was about to go into labour and just over eight hours later Maria was born,” added the overjoyed father.

The second child to be born in 2009 arrived just over threequarters of an hour later.
In Manacor, a boy named Nicolas Blanco was born at 1.15am. His parents originally hail from Uruguay.
Later, at 4.15am, Mar Sampol Borras was born at Clinica Rotger in Palma.
The first child of 2009 to be born at Inca's hospital was Satou Diop Niang, who arrived at 4.46am. His parents are Senegalese.
Amene Khaliphy was born at 4.20am in Minorca's Hospital Mateu Orfila. The child's parents originate from Morocco.
