STAFF REPORTER THE Balearic Islands is one of the first regions of Spain to receive subsidies for farmers and fishermen through a Central Government aid package, said the Agricultural ministry yesterday.

The regional government will be acknowledging receipt of financial aid to the tune of 1.8 million euros today, specifically to aid dry fruit and carob tree growers for costs incurred and losses made during 2009. The money has not come a moment too soon, said a ministry spokesman, bearing in mind the damage that the late frost may have inflicted on the almond harvest. The aid provides support to no less than 3'300 growers on Majorca and Ibiza. Over the last 3 years, 160.6 million euros worth of grants has been paid to farmers and fishermen in the Balearics.
