THE amount of tourists coming to the islands during January and February increased by 19.6 percent in comparison with the same period in 2006, according to figures from the Balearic Ministry for Tourism.

The Ministry calculated that during the last four years the islands have seen an increase of one million visitors in the medium and low seasons.
The Minister for Tourism, Joan Flaquer, said yesterday at a press conference that between the months of October and February 241'399 more visitors came to the Balearics than during the same period the year before.

This was, he said “an excellent achievement” and respresented an increase of more than 600'000 people in relation to the same months during 2002 and 2003.

The Minister for Tourism said that the number of tourists which Majorca received in the first two months of the year was an increase of 15 percent, lower than the increases recorded in the other Balearic islands. Ibiza and Formentera had an increase of 78.8 percent and Minorca an increase of 38.8 percent.

In fact, between January and February this year 360'636 foreign tourists came to the Balearics and 318'487 Spanish visitors, figures which represent an increase of 5.5 and 40.9 percent respectively, in comparison with the first two months of 2006.
