TOURIST apartments in the Balearics had 65'444 million overnight stays in February, which was an increase of 13.7 percent in comparison with the same month last year, according to figures released yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The islands were the third autonomous region with the highest occupation in this type of accommodation last month, with 57.9 percent of the apartments occupied and an average stay of 8.2 days, behind the Canaries with 75.8 percent and Madrid with 74.3 percent.

With regard to overnight stays in tourist areas, Majorca is in seventh position with around 63'000 overnight stays, an average stay of 8.1 days and an occupation figure of 61 percent.

With regard to rural tourism, the Balearics recorded 11'918 overnight stays last month, with an average stay of 3.2 days and an occupation of 23.9 percent. This was the second highest among the regions, only exceeded by the Canary Islands with 32.3 percent occupation.

Throughout Spain, non hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, camping sites, rural tourist accommodation) recorded more than 5.4 million overnight stays in February, which was an increase of 3.7 percent in comparison with last year.
