THE Balearic Minister for Tourism, Joan Flaquer, said yesterday that everything points to a good Summer season after the success of Easter bookings (everything is fully booked) for the hotel industry, although he did admit that at the moment he couldn't confirm “anything” with “certainty”. This is, he said, because there is more competition in the tourist markets now which means that many visitors decide, and make their bookings, “at the last minute”. Flaquer was responding to statements by certain hoteliers in Magalluf who said that the good Easter figures don't in any way guarantee a good summer season. The Minister agreed with this, saying that he was more inclined to go on actual figures than forecasts because “they could come to nothing”.
However, he added that he was optimistic for the summer season after announcing that the excellent level of bookings for Easter will guarantee a good start to the tourist season. Finally, Flaquer said that the industry has to keep working on improving its offers so that these “good indications will become reality”.
Part of the proof of this, according to him, is that the British tourist market has recovered quite well after having suffered a decline in the last few years.
