Joan Collins MANACOR council's councillor for Culture, Maria Antonia Mercant, yesterday presented the programme of cultural activities which will take place in the town from April 8 to 23 and which will “serve to enrich the traditional religious activities of Easter week”. Mercant, who was accompanied by the local priest, Mossen Andreu Genovart, and the President of the Manacor Association of Brotherhoods of Semana Santa, Guillem Barcelo, gave a resume of the “wide range of cultural and leisure opportunities which will be on offer during the days of the fiesta, in addition to the traditional religious celebrations”. On Saturday April 8 a cycle of concerts, which will take place in the Convent of Santo Domingo at 9pm, will begin with a performance by the “University Chorale of the Balearic Islands”. Then on Wednesday April 12, the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth will be commemorated with a concert sponsored by the Balearic Government through Ibatur and in collaboration with the “Sa Nostra” Foundation, a joint initiative by the Inca and Manacor councils. The “Classical Orchestra” will perform Mozart's “Requiem” under the baton of the director Josep Maria Moreno, accompanied by Manacor's soprano, Paula Rossello, mezzosoprano Frederique Sizaret, tenor Antoni Aragon, bass Josep Miquel Robot, and the Capella Mallorquina choir. The programme of activities also includes the celebration of “Four days of local studies”; leisure time activities for children of 5 to 11 years in Son Talent; a course in infant and junior literature, as well as a reading of the “Rondalles” (folk tales) in the Foundation Antoni Maria Alcover. According to Mercant, art “will play a distinct role in the celebrations of Holy Week” with the opening of art exhibitions in the “Cloister of San Vicente Ferrer” and the “Torre de Ses Puntes”, where local and foreign artists, Yolanda Adrover and Paz Alcoverro among them, will display their work.
