Staff Reporter PALMA will be hosting a European Union summit this month on special financial allowances to be made to the EU's island regions. Taking advantage of Spain's six-month presidency of the European Union, Balearic President Francesc Antich will be in the chair on 26th April at an event to be held at Palma's Modern and Contemporary Art museum, Es Baluard. The summit will also be attended by Spanish Vice-President Manuel Chaves.

The Balearic government's European funding director, Jaume Garau, said yesterday that 14 million people live on islands which belong to the EU's 27 member states. “If we collaborate with one another, we will be able to act with considerable force,” he said. “The island status of the Balearics has not yet been officially recognised whereas Cyprus and Malta are referred to as “Island States.”
