OPERATING income (before tax) at Palma airport last year registered the highest increase of any of the airports run by the Spanish National Airports Authority (AENA), a spokesman confirmed yesterday.

The 43.9 million euros grossed by Palma airport last year was 23.5 percent higher than income for 2009, AENA reported. This increase has apparently turned Palma into the most profitable airport in the Authority's network in Spain.

AENA claims that its “success story” of airport profitability can be attributed to its austerity measures and reforms in the air route navigation system which has reduced operating costs, down to 126.3 million euros in 2010 from 140.3 million in 2009.

Another indicator of the boom at Palma airport is an index showing its capacity to generate business, up by 22 percent last year in comparison with 2009.
